hey guys! I just thought that the story of Zeta(5) being irrational that has emerged on this subreddit has been a fascinating example of the weird times we live in.
we have a case of an open problem in maths being solved, first-wave checked, and formally verified by seemingly non-expert mathematicians (i mean this respectfully, also as a non-expert non-mathematician).
its particularly fascinating that in a world where peer review and conferences seem to be drowning in a sea of proofs and papers, that Reddit of all places, managed to do so public, voluntary verification. of course, peer review of a paper is much more than what was done here, but this is still an interesting case, and may serve as an idea for how to do preliminary verification of math results in the future, before things make it into conferences.
