I have a great career. They love me, pay me well, treat me well, and I’m really good at it. I don’t hate the job, but I also don’t love it. I can’t quite place why this is, but I think part of it is I want a new challenge and that I get bored easily.
Sometimes I daydream about doing something else. Lately it’s been about going back to school for mathematics. Before I changed majors to my current field, I was a math major. I made it through calc 3, linear algebra, and calc based physics before I decided that I didn’t want to focus on mathematics and switched majors. This was nearly 15 years ago. I’ve been in my current career for 10 years. I do not remember any of this, and I’d basically have to relearn all mathematics.
I cannot get the idea of changing careers and going back to school for mathematics out of my head, and it’s poisoning my water hole. This would be expensive, time consuming, and I don’t even know what I’d do with it once I graduate. I’m nothing special, and would be nothing more than an average level mathematician. Part of me likes the idea of teaching, but I hate the pay and crap teachers go through.
My plea to you: please help me kill this daydream. What can you tell me that would reasonably make me stop thinking the grass is greener? I figured this group of people could tell me the realities of this career that I am unable to see without actually diving in.
