I am a junior math major currently and next semester, we are recommended to do a reading course (independent study) on a topic for our final year thesis.
I wanted to do a logic reading course model theory/proof theory that sort of thing but a grad student I am friends with told me that logic is a dead subfield and that I am lowering what is already a very low chance of ever getting an academic position.
Is this true? I have noticed even in my department which is pretty highly ranked has only one professor who does logic alongside algebraic topology and hasn't published anything this decade.
Can any mathematician confirm?
